Notification of works at Eastern Creek Recycling Ecology Park

1. Scope of works expected to commence from 6 December 2024.

As flagged in previous updates, drilling works are ongoing at the Eastern Creek landfill to create new gas wells and maintain existing gas wells at the landfill.

This program is taking place over three stages, with each stage of works taking 4 to 5 weeks to complete and involves the drilling of approximately 20 gas wells. Summary of the program of works are noted below:

  1. Stage 1 – Completed. Works were carried out between September – October 2024.
  2. Stage 2 – Expected to commence from 6 December 2024 and conclude by January 2025. No works are proposed to take place during the Christmas and New Year break, from 23 December 2024 to 4 January 2025 (with the exception any urgent maintenance or repairs to keep the system running, if required).
  3. Stage 3 – Expected to commence in February 2025 and conclude by April 2025.

All works will be undertaken during operational hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays.

Please note,  in the case of unfavourable weather conditions including high winds and rain, the works may be postponed.

2. Why are the works needed?

Progressive installation of landfill gas wells is part of the normal operation of a landfill with a landfill gas extraction and treatment system installed. The works are necessary to increase the extraction capacity for the system, to improve environmental outcomes for the Eastern Creek site and prepare for the commissioning of the power generation of the renewable energy power station, expected to be completed by early 2025. This forms an important part of the company’s decarbonisation plan, and by producing renewable energy powered by the landfill gas extracted from our landfill.

3.What is BINGO doing to prevent odour during the works?

Each well will be sealed after drilling works are completed, and we do not expect any odour in connection with these works. As a precaution, a mobile odour control spray unit will be used as an additional control for the duration of the works, to supplement our existing odour prevention measures.

As noted above, in the case of unfavourable weather conditions, the works will be postponed to a future date.

4. What should I do if I have an issue?

BINGO will continue to provide regular updates to the community over the course of these works.

If community members have any concerns, please call BINGO’s environmental hotline on 02 6946 4555  or contact us.
