Update on works at Eastern Creek Recycling Ecology Park

1. Landfill gas works

As flagged in the 14 August and 6 September site updates, drilling works are taking place at the Eastern Creek landfill to create new gas wells and maintain existing gas wells at the landfill.

This program is taking place over three stages, with each stage of works taking 4 to 5 weeks to complete and involving the drilling of approximately 20 gas wells. Approximate timeframes are noted below and dates for Stage 2 and 3 will be confirmed in the coming months:

  • Stage 1 of works – Works commenced from Monday 9 September 2024 and expected to conclude by 21 October. (Delay noted from the initial completion timeframe of 7 October due to delays in sourcing of equipment and adverse weather conditions).
  • Stage 2 of works – Expected to take place between November 2024 and December 2024.
  • Stage 3 of works – Expected to commence in January 2025 and conclude by March 2025.

Stage 1 of the drilling works program is ongoing, and all works are being undertaken during operational hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays.

Why are the works needed?

The works are necessary to increase the extraction capacity for the landfill gas, to improve environmental outcomes for the Eastern Creek site and in preparation for commissioning of the power generation of the renewable energy power station, expected to be completed by early 2025. This forms an important part of the company’s decarbonisation plan and will help in the production of renewable energy from our landfill. The development of the renewable energy power station is part of the 15-year landfill gas agreement between BINGO and LGI Limited. Please click here to learn more about the agreement.

What is BINGO doing to prevent odour during the works?

Each well will be sealed after drilling works are completed, and we do not expect any odour in connection with these works. As a precaution, a mobile odour control spray unit will be used as an additional control for the duration of the works, to supplement our existing odour prevention measures.

In the case of unfavourable weather conditions, the works will be postponed to a future date.

2. Landfill sidewall works

As noted in the 6 September site update, in addition to the above works, BINGO is also undertaking landfill sidewall gas works to prepare for longer term landfill gas management within the landfill.

These works will be progressively carried out as the landfill rises and will involve installing vertical and horizontal wells and pipes (approximately 60 pipes) into the walls of the landfill, to prepare for gas extraction in the upper levels of the landfill.

3. Installation of dome shelters

We are continuously reviewing and upgrading existing environmental controls across our Eastern Creek operations.

As noted in the 26 July update, BINGO has now completed installing three additional dome structures to cover product storage areas in the timber yard, which will help strengthen existing dust control measures.
