1. Landfill gas works.
As noted in our 14 August update, drilling works were expected to commence on 26 August to create new gas wells and maintain existing gas wells for the Eastern Creek landfill.
This work is postponed, due to adverse weather conditions and other logistical delays. We anticipate these works to commence from Monday 9 September.
As noted in the 14 August update, the drilling will take place over three stages. Each stage of works will take 4 to 5 weeks and will involve drilling approximately 20 gas wells (around 60 by the end of the 3 stages).
Approximate timeframes for the various stages are noted below. Dates for Stage 2 and 3 will be confirmed in the coming months:
- Stage 1 of works – Expected to now commence from Monday 9 September 2024 and conclude by Monday 7 October 2024.
- Stage 2 of works – Expected to take place between November 2024 and December 2024.
- Stage 3 of works – Expected to commence from January 2025 and concluded by March 2025.
All works will be undertaken during operational hours from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays.
Why are the works needed?
The works are necessary to increase the extraction capacity for the landfill gas, to improve environmental outcomes for the Eastern Creek site and in preparation for commissioning of the power generation of the renewable energy power station, expected to be completed by early 2025. This forms an important part of the company’s decarbonisation plan and will help in the production of renewable energy from our landfill.
What is BINGO doing to prevent odour during the works?
Each well will be sealed after drilling works are completed, and we do not expect any odour in connection with these works. As a precaution, a mobile odour control spray unit will be used as an additional control for the duration of the works, to supplement our existing odour prevention measures.
In the case of unfavourable weather conditions, the works will be postponed to a future date.
2. Landfill sidewall works
BINGO is also undertaking landfill sidewall gas works to improve longer term controls for both the Landfill Gas and Leachate Management operations within the landfill. These works will involve installing a number of vertical and horizontal wells and pipes (approximately over 60 pipes) trenched into the walls of the landfill, to help with gas extraction.
These works will be progressively installed as the landfill rises.
3. Interruptions to power supply to the flares.
Short disruptions to the power supply to the permanent flares occurred on Friday 30 August, on 2 occasions each lasting 5-15 minutes. These short disruptions are unlikely to have an impact on the operation of the landfill gas collection system, which operates 24/7. Since a cabling fault in May 2024, mains power supply to the permanent flares is no longer supported and they have been powered by generators. Due to the age of the cables, we have been advised that they are unable to be re-energised until they are replaced.
To avoid any further interruptions to the operation of the permanent flares and to support the operation of the renewable power station on site, BINGO made an application to upgrade the power supplies, including replacement of the old cabling, which was recently approved by Endeavour Energy. These upgrades are expected to commence in December 2024. Until this time, we propose to continue the use of generators to power the flares.
As previously advised, BINGO also maintains a temporary flare on site for use during maintenance, which was operated during the recent interruptions.
